AN IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL OUR PHARM-A-TEMP CLIENTS AND LOCUM PHARMACISTS The tax office has indicated that they are targeting pharmacies and in particular, sham contracting. Locums who have previously submitted a tax invoice may need to rethink their mode of operation. Employers should be wary of accepting tax invoices, as according to the Government website www.ato.gov.au/employeecontractor locum pharmacists are classified by the tax department as employees. Therefore, they should be paid a wage, have PAYG deducted and superannuation sent direct to the superannuation fund. By law, all superannuation with or without an invoice must be paid into the superannuation fund and not to the locum. We do realize this does create extra work for the employers but this small amount of work could save you hefty fines by the ATO. If you are in any doubt, we are happy to take enquiries, but we do recommend that you seek your own accountant/taxation advice. For more information, log onto the website mentioned in this communication and run through the questions.
